Our Ales Hawaii Nui Brewing

Weʻve been asked by several customers and even our friends about the difference between an ale and a lager (we only produce ales!) and also what makes one ale different than the other, besides color? Hereʻs the differences between our beers. We offer four styles, each with a distinct flavor profile and taste! Hereʻs how they stack up against each other:

Golden Ale: Kauaʻi Golden Ale

A style that was developed first in the United Kingdom, golden ales are light in color and typically have a hint of citrus. Our brew is typical in nature of a golden ales with a bright tropical taste and a dry finish! This brew is great with fish and poultry! We used it in our Beer Recipe: Beer Can Chicken and it was fantastic!

Amber Ale: Sunset Amber Ale

Amber is a term that is somewhat versatile in the brewing industry. They are typically full-bodied malt brews that often have hints of caramel and are found as lagers or ales. The Sunset Amber Ale is a moderately bitter amber ale with hints of chocolate and an aroma of green woods. A beer of this nature goes great with barbecued food and spicy foods.  Look for a fun doughnut recipe using this brew soon!

Brown Ale: Hapa Brown Ale

As you might imagine, a brown ale is usually brown-amber colored. This is one of the older styles of beers developed in brewing history.  As far back as the 18th century, brown ales were made from 100% brown malt and lightly hopped.  Our award-winning Hapa Brown Ale is an American-Style brown ale and goes great with meaty dishes like steak and hamburgers. On of our favorite spots in Hilo is Hilo Burger Joint! They have GREAT burgers and are all made with grass-fed beef!

Belgian Red Ale: Southern Cross Belgian Style Double Red Ale

As with the brown ale, you might imagine a red ale to be red and you would be correct, although it does come in several other variations depending on its base. Typically moderate to heavy in fruit flavors, the Belgian red is known for a sour-acidic aftertaste. In Southern Crossʻ case youʻll find a different taste palette, the Belgian yeast strain lends itself to a caramel maltiness and light toffee note, which is not only delicious, but makes it great for using in cooking, even “Adult Pudding”.
